Slab Leak Detection

Why San Diego Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore a Slab Leak

A slab leak can be difficult for a homeowner to identify because the plumbing may be located beneath the foundation.

However, there can be warning signs.

Watch for Unexpected Moisture

Warm or damp areas on floors, unexplained water accumulation, or changes in flooring can warrant professional inspection.

Listen for Running Water

If you hear water when fixtures are turned off, there may be a hidden leak.

Watch Your Water Bill

An unexplained increase in water usage can sometimes point toward a leak.

Professional leak detection can help identify problems without unnecessary guesswork.

All American Plumbing provides slab leak and gas leak detection and repair services in San Diego.

Don’t Wait for Major Damage

A hidden plumbing leak can continue affecting a property until the source is identified.

If you suspect a slab leak in your San Diego home, professional leak detection can help determine what’s happening and what repairs may be required.

Slab Leak Detection in Poway, CA

How Professionals Do It without Tearing Up Your Floors

Imagine tearing up your floors to find the root cause of a slab leak. That means fixing a problem at the expense of another component of your home that costs thousands of dollars to build. Doing it sounds not just a waste of money, but a messy project. But the good news is that, with technological advancements, plumbing companies can perform slab leak detection in Poway, CA, with little to no disruption to your home.

There are several ways professional plumbers do slab leak detection nowadays, including the following:

Listening Devices

Plumbers often start with electronic listening tools (these are highly sensitive noise detectors). They can detect the sound of water escaping from a pipe under your concrete slab. The technician listens carefully through the floor, pinpointing the leak by sound alone. It is like using a stethoscope–only it is for your plumbing.

Thermal Imaging

A thermal imaging camera is another tool your plumbing contractor uses for slab leak detection. In essence, this equipment detects temperature differences in your floor caused by water leakage. If a hot water pipe leaks under the slab, the camera can “see” the heat spreading through the concrete, as it reflects on the scan results. It helps spot the root cause without having to rip anything up.

Pressure Testing

Another method your plumbing contractor may use is a pressure test. It helps narrow down which line is leaking. Once the affected area is determined, your plumbing technician isolates and monitors the pressure of that area. Your plumber will know there’s a leak in that section if its pressure drops.

Moisture Sensors

Plumbing companies may also use moisture sensors to check for dampness around your foundation or flooring. It is specifically helpful when the leak is small or slow and hasn’t caused visible damage yet.

There are plenty of tools out there that plumbers use for slab leak detection in Poway, CA. They help detect and promptly fix plumbing issues that would otherwise cause expensive repairs. However, it is still worth noting that the success of using these tools depends on how skilled and experienced your contractor is in plumbing work.

Leak detection tips will help you determine if you have a slab leak.

http://www.youtube.com/user/GuardianPlumbing1111 This would be a sign of a possible slab leak, you have water coming out of the slab underneath the house where there is no reason for there to be water pulling up. It is coming out of a crack from the house, typically that could be signs of water leaking from pipes underneath the slab. Another thing to look for trying to figure out if you have a slab leak is water inside the house coming out of walls underneath cabinets out of cracks in the tile. Generally this happens in areas close to plumbing such as bathrooms or kitchens and laundry room and what you will notice is water coming out of crack underneath walls because the leak is under the slab and is surfacing through floors and cracks in flooring. If the water is hot then you are dealing with a hot water leak. Another symptom of slab leaks is hot floors. It is easier to determine if you have a tile floor rather that carpet because there is no insulation. If you have a hot water slab leak, which happens 80 to 90 percent of the time, the heat from the slab leak and heats up the concrete in the subfloor of the tile then heating the tile. If the tile is heated only in one specific spot and the rest of the tile is cool that is a good indication of a hot water leak. Another way to determine if you have a hot water leak is your water heater. If your water heater is running 24 hours per day this is not good. If you empty your water heater and refill it with cool water, it should take about an hour to heat up. Normal daily water use will trigger the water heater to run for about 15 to 20 minutes and then stop running. But if it is running constantly then you have a flow of water going out and a flow of water coming in all the time, the water heater is constantly running to keep up with the demand of a broken pipe in the slab causing a leak. http://youtu.be/zzpoaf4jP_8
